A number of opportunities are available to join the team at Camp Elim, from paid positions to volunteering.

Summer Camp Director

The Summer Camp Director is hired from May to August and is in charge of the Summer Camp Program.

Being a director at a camp is an amazing, unforgetable, and richly rewarding experience. Just ask anyone who has been a director before and they will tell you the same thing. In fact talk to some of your leaders in your community and chances are they were, at some point, a director at a camp. They will also tell you that being a director gave them invaluable leadership experience that helped them discover themself and God.

Being the Director is never easy work. You are "on-call" 24 hours/day during camp. The director is never just the director. The director must be ready at all times to be where they are needed, whether that is with maintenance or helping to cure a homesick camper. Needless to say there is never a dull moment.

  • The Summer Director plans and organizes the summer program. He/she is in charge of finding and hiring all of the staff including Cabin Leaders, Cabin Leaders-in-Training, Cooks, and Camp Pastors.
  • May and June are the prep months. There is no camp going on but he/she must start planning the summer program. The Director can stay right at the camp where lodging is provided.
  • The Director is paid full-time (wage TBN) until camp is finished in August. During camp, the director receives free room and board.
  • Being a director is perfect for a university student who has the right amount of experience, thinks outdoor ministry is important, and needs to make a bit of money for the next semester.
  • Public relations and camp promotion is very important and the Director must be able to be ready to get out there and promote the camp in the community around Camp Elim.
  • The Director works in conjunction with the Board, who oversee all operations at Elim. They are the ones responsible for employing the Director and Manager.

If this sounds like your dream job then you should contact the camp and apply!

Year-Round Manager

The Year-Round Manager maintains the camp and is in charge of the off-season rentals.

The duties of the Year-Round Manager are:

  • Maintenance of the camp buildings, sailboats, canoes, kayaks, lawn mower, irrigation pumps, etc. This involves cleaning of the facility to make it fit for camp session and rentals when not used for camps; irrigating and cutting the grass, pruning trees, etc.
  • Scheduling and overseeing the rental program; family and group reunions, retreats, school outdoor ed days, etc. We are trying to expand and develop our rental program particularly the latter, with nature and environmental hikes, etc. We have a small nature museum in the basement of the house.
  • Purchasing agent for food and supplies for the camp program. This involves picking up the supplies in Swift Current and taking them to the camp.
  • Running the motorboat and assisting with the camp water sports during camp sessions, assisting with an overnight sleepout.
  • The skills required for the Year-Round Manager are fairly broad: handyman skills in carpentry and mechanics, business acumen in overseeing the rental program. Good public relations is an absolute essential. Love for kids and people certainly helps. The duties in for school rentals can involve program development and teaching skills.
  • Pay for the Year-Round Manager is based on voluntary service considerations with about half time salary at $1400/month and free lodging in a 4 bedroom house at the camp which we value at $800/month (utilities included and you only pay your long distance telephone calls).
  • There must be liason between Summer Camp Director and Year-Round Manager and there can be some overlap in duties.
  • We try to tailor the duties to the people. For example, if you are interested and capable of being a Summer Camp Director and mixing it with some of the Year-Round Manager's duties, we could possibly work out something and hire a student to pickup some of the maintenance duties during the summer. Some years we have an Assistant Director which reduces the Year-Round Manager's load somewhat.
  • Depending on qualifications and skills, both the Year-Round Manager position and the Summer Camp Director could be filled by a couple.

Cabin Leaders

If you have completed grade twelve, then apply to Camp Elim as a cabin leader this summer. And why stop there? If you are a certified life guard or love singing, then apply as a camp life guard or song leader. Have fun growing in your faith as you help young children nurture their own relationship to God. Have fun going to camp and get paid for it!

Calling all highschool graduates, university students, and former cabin leaders-in-training!

Camp Elim needs cabin leaders every summer to lead cabin groups, actvities, provide leadership to younger staff, and be role models for the many campers that come through Elim each summer.

Being a cabin leader is a great way to spend a summer. You're by the lake, with your friends, and to top it off you get paid for it all!

  • At Camp Elim we hire 6 cabin leaders, three male and three female. Each are paid at least minimum wage for 40 hour weeks.
  • Cabin leaders must be over 18 and have finished hig hschool. If you were a cabin leader-in-training at Elim or a CIT at another camp, you may have a better chance of getting hired.
  • Cabin leaders must complete and pass a police background check to be considered for hire. There are no exceptions to this rule. An applicant may be turned down if he/she is unwilling to provide a background check or has a criminal record. Again there are no exceptions to this rule.

  • All cabin leaders must attend the staff orientation prior to the start the summer camp program.

Cabin Leaders-in-Training

The cabin leader-in-training program is perhaps one of the most important program at any camp. As a cabin leader-in-training you gain valuable job experience, on the job training, and in the end, it is the cabin leaders-in-training who make up the core of the summer staff.

Experience the thrill of working together with a cabin leader. Learn how to help young children experience God in the wilderness. Prepare yourself for future summers when you can finally become a cabin leader.

Some of the duties of a cabin leader-in-training are:

  • Be a positive role model to campers and recognize the large influence you have on kids.
  • Help the cabin leader in areas of leading activities and discipline.
  • Responsible to be with their cabin group at all times and take an active part in being the cabin leader.
  • Responsible for planning games and leading cabin group around during the day.

Cabin leaders-in-training are welcome to work as many weeks as they want unless there is a large amount of cabin leader-in-training applicants. We will try to have as many cabin leaders-in-training work as is possible. ALL cabin leaders-in-training must attend staff orientation prior to the start of camp and must complete and pass a police background check.

As a cabin leader-in-training you are a volunteer which means you do not receive any money. BUT you do receive free room and board AND a discount on your registration fee if you attend Teen camp as a camper.

Being a cabin leader-in-training is a lot of fun. You get to spend part, or all, of your summer by the lake, spend time with your friends, and make tons of new ones.

Head Cooks

Remember all those yummy meals when you went to camp? Remember how nice and friendly the cooks were? Do you have a love for cooking and want to spend some time away from the city? Then you should be a Head Cook at Camp ELim this summer.

  • Head Cooks are responsible for preparing all meals as well as two snacks each day.
  • You will receive free room and board along with an honourarium for your hard work. We also have lodging for any other friend or family member that wants to tag along.
  • We usually try to have kitchen helpers to help on the busy days so that the work load isn't too heavy. If you a friend or spouse that would like to help, they are more than welcome.
  • Cooks must complete and pass a police background check as per the request of the Director.
  • The Head Cook is hired by the Director and will refer to him/her with regards to meals, menus and any other information.

  • Please contact the camp for more information on this or any other position that might interest you.

If all of this sounds fantastic, contact us for more information.

Camp Pastors

The Camp Pastor is responsible for leading the Bible time which happens during each morning of the Summer Camp program. During this time there is lots of singing and sometimes a craft to accompany the lesson.

Here are some more details about the Camp Pastor:

  • The Camp Pastor is in charge of leading the Bible Time with a lesson drawn up from the curriculum. You will also lead a small session during the evening camp fire.
  • A curriculum for the week is provided ahead of time so that the Camp Pastor has a sufficient amount of time to plan the lessons.
  • The curriculum usually has ideas for lessons and a general plan of action for each day. You just have to teach it.
  • There will be lodging and food provided for the week for yourself and for any friend or family member who wishes to join you.
  • Camp Pastors have to complete and pass a police background check upon the request of the Director. If you refuse to have a police check, or have a criminal record involving children you may be refused the position.
  • As a Camp Pastor you will receive an honourarium for your service and compensation for the mileage driven to and from camp. The amount of the honourarium and mileage compensation depends on whether you are employed by the church or not. Please ask the Director if you have questions about this.
  • A Camp Pastor can be anyone who feels they want to spend some time at camp, or feels they want some time away from the city. Since the primary role of the Camp Pastor is to lead during the two periods of the day, there is often a bit of down time for resting, reading, relaxation, or perhaps some canoeing.
  • A Camp Pastor does not have to be a Pastor or Youth Pastor from a church. It could be a teacher or grandparent or university student. You just have to be interested in teaching the Bible to kids.

Volunteers

Volunteers make up a vital and important part of our staff. We have volunteer positions for anyone willing to spend some time at camp. We require camp nurses, maintenance persons, cooks, kitchen helpers and Bible instructors. And remember, all volunteers receive free room and board.

If you have experience in the field of nursing or have CPR/First Aid training then you could volunteer as a Camp Nurse.

If you're the family handy-man and want to spend some time in a beautiful outdoor setting, then you could volunteer in the maintenance department.

Do you like to cook but don't want the stress of being a head cook? You can help as a Kitchen Helper. Our Head Cooks need help especially when there are hungry campers and staff to feed. You can help for an afternoon, a day, or an entire week.
